Dear Erica,
All wines arrived in Holland today. Finally! I can't wait to pop one of the corks.
On your website I can not find a drinking window for the ordered wines
could you please elaborate on driking windows for:
The Judge
Chardonnay
Syrah
When drinking the Syrah early, is decanting required? For how long?
best, Ralph

Dear Ralph,
Winemakers who are also winery owners, like me, always say “drink up” so you are sure to buy the next vintage. Seriously, our wines are never painful when they are young. This is not true of some producers, who cannot control the tannin or the acidity in their wines. Having said that, I could offer that the Napa Chardonnay is utterly delicious when it is released, but if you have a taste for aged Chardonnay, then 2 to 5 years is an interesting period to watch them develop ( IF YOU HAVE A TEMP CONTROL CELLAR WHICH DOES NOT GO ABOVE 15degC.) The Judge drinks perfectly when it is a youngster, and will go a bit longer than the Napa in the cellar. The Syrah from both 05 and 06 are incredibly charming at the moment and both have the power to develop in your TEMP CONTROLLED CELLAR for many years. If you buy enough wine to watch the ageing trajectory, but not so much that you would be unhappy drinking within a year what is left after several years of ageing, then you will never be disappointed because great wines do not crash overnight. That is to say, if you notice a bottle age character creeping into the wine that is the beginning of what is too much for you, then you certainly have a year or so to enjoy the bottles which remain. This is true of all great wine.
Cheers,
John Kongsgaard
Ja dus! M.i. een zeer sterke actie.
