Chateau Petrus, Pomerol 2008
There's no doubting whose king of the Moueix stable this year. This is a big, brooding wine, deep coloured with an impressive density of fruit and imposing structure behind. Typical of the vintage the tannins are powerful, fresh and long. Drink 2018-2040. (19 points)
Chateau l'Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol 2008
Consistent as ever, owner Denis Durantou has produced another classic, long ageing wine with an overall note of distinction. The Merlot is pure and expressive, the tannins firm but refined, the 15% Cabernet Franc adding complexity and length on the finish. Drink 2018-2035. (18.5 points)
Chateau Lafleur, Pomerol 2008
With 54% Cabernet Franc in the blend this is a wine of elegance, length and line. The wine is discretion itself, giving the impression of austerity, but there's a finesse to the fruit and tannins and tremendous length on the finish which augers well for the future. Drink 2018-2035. (19 points)
Chateau Trotanoy, Pomerol 2008
Discreet and subdued but with an impressive density of fruit and ripe, firm tannins. Powerful, muscular but not quite the majesty of Pétrus this year. Drink 2018-2035. (18.5 points)
Chateau l'Evangile, Pomerol 2008
This is a very good Evangile, along with the 2005 one of the best of the Rothschild era, though less powerful in style. There's a density and gourmand quality to the fruit (yield was only 27 hl/ha) as well as a fine tannic frame. The 12% Cabernet Franc provides added complexity, balance and charm. Drink 2016-2030. (18 points)
